At What Age Should Children First Visit The Dentist?

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Well, first some background. Your child starts to get baby teeth at six months old. Making sure your baby has clean teeth before the dentist can go a long way with ensuring that their future teeth are healthy. Remember that baby enamel is much thinner than adult enamel, which means that plaque build-up occurs more often, especially after sugary drinks such as juice. Another recommendation is to consider using fluoride supplements to support their weak enamel. Fluoride is also essential in building strong adult teeth. Another tip: you can also wipe off plaque with a clean washcloth or very soft toothbrush.

Just have a baby? No need to rush to Hagen just yet! Your child’s first dental visit should be around age 3, and we pride ourselves on not only committing to quality service, but also ensuring our patients are comfortable. This is especially important for kids! We want their first visit to be memorable – but only in a good way!

If your child has not been to the dentist yet – but is old enough to know how to tie their shoe – you should know your child also has the ability, and should know how, to brush their teeth! Of course it is important to teach them WHY it’s important and HOW they should be brushing. You can use musical toothbrushes, an egg timer, or a song to ensure they are brushing for long enough (two minutes).
