Brighter & Whiter Smile at Hagen Dental Practice

There are so many reasons why this time of year people start thinking about teeth whitening again. Maybe you are getting ready for Spring break, an upcoming vacation, or you just know you have weddings, graduations, barbecues and other parties to attend in the coming months.

Here we break down some of the top misconceptions about teeth whitening options, and then we look at Zoom! Whitening in further detail. Be sure to ask us if you have any questions specific to you as a patient!

Myth #1: In-office whitening treatments are only for those with sensitive teeth.

This is not necessarily true! Store-purchased, at-home whitening kits have varying levels of success for people in terms of how much they whiten, and that is partially due to how they are applied and how much peroxide they have in them. How long you have the treatment on, how much peroxide they have, and the way those treatments are applied to your teeth are going to change how much tooth sensitivity you experience.

Because of these factors, at-home treatments can result in just as much teeth sensitivity (or more or less) as in-office treatments! Recall with Zoom! Whitening we do make sure the gum is protected during the treatment, but that still doesn’t guarantee that there is not any teeth sensitivity experienced during or after your treatment.

Myth #2: Whitening toothpastes can do just as much as professional whitening treatments.

Whitening toothpastes help keep your teeth white on the surface, for the most part! On the other hand, professional or store-bought bleaching kits are applied differently to be more effective in getting to deep stains and whitening the teeth.

Consider how we use Zoom! Whitening: we apply hydrogen-peroxide formula to teeth—again, covering up the surrounding gum to avoid any sensitivity you may have, and then there is ultraviolet light shined onto the teeth. This entire process gets rid of DEEP stains on your teeth, unlike whitening toothpastes which look to remove surface stains via gentle polishing, chemical chelation, or other non-bleaching methods.

Myth #3: Professional teeth whitening will damage your enamel.

Because we are using a safe treatment here at Hagen Dental, we are not harming your enamel when whitening your teeth by using Zoom! What’s more is that the FDA has to approve these ways of teeth whitening, which just means that they have to pass rigorous testing to be sure that it is safe for people to use.

With that said, the American Dental Association does suggest that before using any bleaching product, you see your dentist and talk over your current oral health so that can you know what is best for you. After this consultation, you can have confidence that any crowns, fillings, very dark stains or anything specific to your health is taken into consideration. This will help to ensure you follow a plan that is both safe and effective.

Myth #4: At-home options are totally unsafe.

While there may be products for sale that are unsafe, ask us about at-home options you can use that are both safe and effective. Of course any time you use whitening products, if you feel pain that doesn’t seem normal, it may be best to stop your treatment.
While we can’t make any generalizations, there are at-home treatment options that are safe and that we can point you towards. Two rules of thumb: 1- Don’t ignore the advice of your dentist when it comes to using whitening products in general, and 2-Don’t continue use of teeth whitening products when you are in pain! Those two rules will go a long when way it comes to using at-home treatments for whiter, brighter teeth.

We celebrate World Smile Day in October. World Smile Day is a day designed to help people smile more by performing random acts of kindness and goodwill. Here are 10 reminders of why we should be smiling:

  1. The classic yellow smiley face that we all know and love was created in 1963. It was designed to symbolize good will and good cheer on the planet (1). Although the original smiley doesn’t include teeth, at Hagen Dental we want to keep your teeth healthy so you can bare your pearly whites even if the smiley face doesn’t!
  2. Harvey Ball, the artist who was the creator of the smiley face, became concerned over the years about the over-commercialization of the smiley symbol. This led him to create World Smile Day, so that we would devote a day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The first World Smile Day was celebrated in 1999 (1).
  3. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Neither does tooth and gum disease. So no matter your race, creed or location, stay vigilant with your oral hygiene habits! Proper diet, daily flossing and brushing, are important to keep issues at bay.
  4. The slogan of the Smile Foundation is, “improving this world, one smile at a time” (2). Good oral hygiene practices are essential for a healthy smile. But have you ever wondered if your diet supports the best building blocks to keep those teeth strong? Mineral deficiencies can lead to weak bones and teeth. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D are all important minerals and vitamins when it comes to preventing tooth decay and oral health issues. Check out these lists of foods that support you in your quest for strong, healthy teeth.

Calcium — Your teeth and jaw are formed and kept strong with the use of lots of calcium. Regular intake of this mineral helps keep your teeth enamel and jaw bones strong and healthy. Most of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones (teeth included!), while some circulates in the bloodstream for other uses. Sources of Magnesium: Dark chocolate, green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and swiss chard, black beans, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, brown rice, cashews, salmon, raisins and avocado.2, 3, 7

Vitamin D — Vitamin D regulates the body’s balance of calcium and phosphorus and can promote their absorption. Vitamin D also helps to decrease inflammation of gums which is associated with periodontal disease.

Congratulations, Kristen Bailey! We asked our Hagen’s Best Smile Contest winner a few questions to better get to know her and also unfold her secrets for a healthy smile.

Length of time being a Hagen Patient: 6 months

Q: How did you choose Hagen?

Kristen: I did some business with Dr. Hagen at Fifth Third and was so impressed with his dental practice when I came to meet him at Hagen Dental. His wife, Jenny Hagen, provided a tour of the office and the entire staff was so personable. The practice was inviting, had state of the art equipment in each room, and was a well lit and clean environment. Although I was generally happy with my dental office, Hagen Dental appeared to offer so much more. I am very happy I made the switch and have already referred a friend.

Q: How do you typically take care of your teeth?

Kristen: I brush/floss my teeth in the morning and before going to bed. I use mouth wash occasionally. Scheduling regular dental appointments is a big piece of how I have been able to maintain good, strong, healthy teeth. I’ve only had one minor cavity in my life, which was easily fixed. I typically follow all the dentist’s instructions with the exception of extracting my wisdom teeth, which I held off until 2009 as an adult.

Q: Do you get in for your dental cleaning regularly?

Kristen: I schedule routine cleanings with the dentist every 6 months. This is an appointment that I’ve always kept since I was a child.

Q: Did your last check up give you a clean bill of health?

Kristen: Yes 🙂
